The Patterson High boys' varsity soccer team delivered another stellar performance Tuesday night, shutting out Sierra High School 5-0 at home. The Tigers, now 9-0-4 overall and 4-0-1 in Valley Oak League play, showcased both defensive grit and offensive creativity to secure their fifth consecutive win.
The match kicked off at 6:18 p.m. under cool conditions, with temperatures at 50 degrees. Fans came prepared with coats, as the weather was expected to get colder as the evening progressed.
Captains Andrew Diaz and Dominik Gallegos led the Tigers to center field for the coin toss, and Sierra began the game with the first touch.
First Half Highlights
Sierra controlled possession early, pushing deep into Patterson territory, but the Tigers’ defense held strong. Center backs Angel Castro and Dominik Gallegos made crucial stops, and defenders Brian Tapia, Andrew Diaz, and Jared Carrete broke up multiple Sierra attacks.
Carrete stood out, clearing loose balls and maintaining composure under pressure. On one occasion, he chased down a loose kick near the right wing, sending the ball out of bounds to disrupt Sierra’s momentum. Carrete’s precision passing repeatedly connected with midfielder Jose Fajardo, helping the Tigers transition to attack.
Patterson struck first with 27:30 left in the half. David Diaz scored with a low-driven shot that skipped under a diving Sierra defender, giving the Tigers a 1-0 lead.
Tensions flared later in the half when a Sierra player committed a harsh sliding tackle on a Patterson player. Both players briefly lost their tempers, prompting the referees to step in and diffuse the situation. Patterson resumed possession and continued to dominate, keeping their possession percentage high by moving the ball effectively from midfield to the backline.
Adrian Arteaga doubled Patterson’s lead with 12:40 left in the first half, slotting home a well-placed shot.
With 7:09 remaining, captain Andrew Diaz attempted a free kick but missed the target. Patterson ended the half up 2-0, or as the European soccer world would say, "two-nil."
Second Half Brilliance
The Tigers carried their momentum into the second half, pouring on three more goals. Carrete, Fajardo, and Oscar Herrera-Morales each scored, capping a dominant offensive display.
Carrete continued to impress with his flair for precise passing, consistently finding open spaces for his teammates. On one notable play, he passed to Fajardo on the wing, who returned the ball for Carrete to attempt a volley, though the Sierra goalkeeper made the save.
Defensively, Castro, Gallegos, and Diaz remained steadfast, frustrating Sierra’s attempts to break through. Erick Castaneda also shone, battling multiple defenders and either dribbling past them or finding teammates with sharp passes to push the ball downfield throughout the second half.
Team Momentum and Standings
With the win, the Tigers improved their overall record to 9-0-4 and their Valley Oak League record to 4-0-1. They are first in the league standings and on a five-game winning streak.
The team’s unity and sharp execution have been a highlight for Patterson fans, who cheered enthusiastically throughout the match.
Next Home Match
Patterson’s next home game is on Thursday, Jan. 23, against Central Catholic. The Raiders, who are 2-9 overall and 0-5 in league play, sit in last place in the Valley Oak League standings.
The Tigers will look to extend their unbeaten streak as they push for league dominance.
