Girls basketball: Falcons blow out Riptide in bounce back CCAA win
The Millennium High girls basketball team is officially up and running in Central California Athletic Alliance (CCAA) play. The Falcons came into their home clash against River Islands Monday night at West High a winless 0-2 in the league. However, the hosts were able to pick up their premiere victory convincingly, 48-25, behind a spectacular performance from junior leader Sarah Digiallonardo who had 31 points and 23 rebounds. Millennium improved to 9-6 overall (1-2 CCAA) but the first half of the River Islands game did not hint at the enormity of the offensive avalanche that was to come after the interval. The Falcons led by six at 25-19 at the break before their 18-2 third-quarter run blew the game wide open. Digiallonardo erupted for 15 points in the frame as Millennium held the visitors to just six second-half points (two in the third). Senior Eileen Flores and freshman Gianna Negrete added 7 points apiece in the win. Sophomore Bella Tran chipped in with the remaining three on a first-quarter triple. advertisement Last Friday, the Falcons fell to Aspire Langston Hughes Academy (ALHA) in a crushing 36-33 road CCAA defeat. Digiallonardo had another double-double there with 14 points and 18 boards. Freshman Sophia Negron added 6 points and 13 rebounds. The loss hurt Millennium, but plenty of basketball remains to be played with everything on the line and head coach Joe Reyes confident of a strong finish to the regular season. The Falcons currently sit tied for third place with Turlock Christian in the CCAA standings. ALHA and Ben Holt College Prep Academy (BHCPA) are locked in second — both at 2-1. Venture Academy is in the top spot, still undefeated at 3-0. With seven league games left on the schedule, Millennium will host Ben Holt next on Friday night at Tracy High.
