Pitman, Hilmar girls golf swing victories
On Senior Day, Pitman High’s girls golf team defeated Downey 258-335 in a Central California Athletic League matchup at Turlock Golf and Country Club. Sophomore Clarissa Vallejo led the way with a round of 47, followed by senior Emma Norenberg (51), sophomore Amaya Singh (52), and junior Kilynn Vasquez and freshman Paige Jajko, who had matching 54’s. Up next for the Pride is the CCAL Championships on Monday at Creekside Golf Course in Modesto starting at 8:30 a.m. Hilmar 197, Hughson 229, at Turlock Golf and Country Club — Valerie Quaid shot a 6-over-par 42, leading the Yellowjackets to a Trans-Valley League victory over the Huskies on Tuesday. Quaid, a junior, played the final four holes of her round in 1-under par, after playing the first five holes in 7-over. “I thought, ‘This is a terrible round,’ and I didn’t want it to be terrible round,” said Quaid. “You’ve got to be positive to turn it around.” The positivity worked. Quaid had pars on the sixth, seventh and eighth, then birdied on the par-4 ninth. She drove the green and was within seven feet of the pin, giving her a very makable eagle putt. But, as she did on several putts during her round, she left it short — for a tap-in birdie. “The tap-in was cool,” said Quaid. “Unlike the 7 I had on the (par-4) third.” Teammate Lilly Garza carded a 48, while Angelina Cruz shot a 52 and Malia Arteaga shot 55. Madden Nobles paced Hughson with a 47, followed by Adaley Poulson (57), Mia Mateo (62), and Kelsey Brower (63). Hilmar, now 11-1 overall this season and 10-1 in league action, will see action again Monday at the TVL tournament on Monday at Micke Grove Golf Links in Lodi.
