High school wrestling: Flames pinned down by Lincoln

The Lodi High boys wrestling team took a hit on Tuesday with a 49-24 loss at the hands of Lincoln. The Flames led 24-20 after eight matches, then lost the final six to see the dual meet slip away. “I thought we were progressing pretty good, but I think we’re stagnating right now, to tell the truth,” said Lodi coach Russell Yip. “We just need to work a little harder, get in a little better shape, we should have been in better shape by now.” The teams traded wins early in the match, with Lincoln’s Darien Respicio pinning Joseph Silveira, followed by a Nathan Warmerdam pin over Lincoln’s Troy Canares. Lincoln scored two wins by Torrance Canares and an overtime win by Phoenix Leyve over Dominic Gauna, before Lodi responded with two straight pins — Brody Shumate over Rylan Bryant and Joaquin Yepez over Abraham Garcia. Yepez’s win in the 152-pound bout gave Lodi its 24-20 lead, but it was Lodi’s last win of the match. Lincoln’s Lamar Smith, Andrew Figueroa, Jediah Gonzalez, Kyle Munoz, Gabriel Alire and Tom Kosier scored wins over their Lodi opponents. “I hope my core guys work a little harder in the wrestling room and get a little more stamina,” Yip said, “because we had some guys run out of gas.” Lodi’s boys are next in action this weekend at the Robert Hatler Memorial in Sonora. Lodi’s girls suffered a sweep, with Lincoln winning all eight of the matches that were contested. Lodi’s girls will compete this weekend at the Foothill Tournament in Sacramento. Lodi’s JV boys team won 42-30, with victories by Bobby Trinh, Alex Galvez and Jameson Rohrer.
